I’m SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York; I was born nearby, and returned to the area in 1990, after graduate school at Berkeley and sixteen years of teaching at the University of California, Irvine.  My scholarship focuses on France in the early modern period, with occasional ventures into other times and places; my teaching interests include European intellectual history from Aquinas to Freud, world civilizations, and the history of war, as well as more standard offerings on Europe in the early modern and modern periods.

For details, consult my c.v.; for some of my papers, check my Academia.edu site.
